Common Questions

Of course not – nothing is free! There are several different solar options that require no upfront cost, such as $0-down loans for a solar system purchase, or third-party-owned programs like a lease or power purchase agreement. Let’s discuss why people might choose one option over the other, and see which one would be the best fit for you.

If your shingles show signs of cracking, granule loss, curling, or if they are brittle, it’s best to consider replacing the shingles prior to installing solar. Quality solar installers, like the ones we work with at Switching to Solar, will perform a thorough roof inspection before they commit to the project to ensure the roof is in good condition. The mounting systems used will not damage your shingles, or void your shingle warranty, and in many ways, solar panels can become a form of protection for your roof from outside damage such as wind or hail.

Including roof replacement in a solar project can be very beneficial. Often, part of the cost can be included in the monthly solar lease or loan payment, lowering what would otherwise be a huge out-of-pocket expense. Depending on the design of your home, it may be possible to replace only the sections of roof where solar will be installed if the rest of the roof is in otherwise good condition.

Each solar project we do in Illinois includes at least one on-site battery to store excess power that your solar system makes during the day, which then helps power your home at night after the sun goes down. Often for no extra cost, the battery (or batteries) can be configured to provide backup protection for your home in case of an outage as well.

The short answer is, yes, but it will be drastically different from what you’re used to paying. By making your own electricity, you can eliminate almost all of the variable charges on your electric utility bill each month, however there are still a couple of fixed charges that everyone pays, whether they have solar or not. During our consultation with you, we will provide clear expectations for what your utility bill could look like after going solar.

In most cases, rooftop solar can only be installed by a property owner on standalone single-family homes or duplexes.

Renters, condo or townhome owners may not be eligible for a rooftop system, but may still be able to support solar energy and enjoy some of its benefits through a Community Solar program. We can help with that, too!

Rather than representing just one solar installer and pushing whatever product makes them the most money, we partner with multiple installers in the region, many of whom offer different programs that suit different needs.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for home solar, so the right program for one family might be entirely wrong for another. With our consultative approach, we take time to understand your needs and goals and can help educate you on which programs may or may not be a good fit. If rooftop solar just isn’t right for you, we can help you learn about a Community Solar program that we partner with as well.

Unlike many other solar consultants, we stay with you every step of the way throughout the project and long after. We love solar and all of the benefits it provides, and we want to make sure you love it, too.
